THE LAYOUT
Our layout is basically a round the wall design with a return loops in a couple of locations.
There is also a branch line with end to end running. For hidden storage we have two larger
staging yards and one smaller with a fictional traffic function. The layout with its five
communities almost fills up our whole room, size 33 X 46 feet or 10 X 14 meters.

NEWPORT
Our biggest city with larger yards for storage and train meets. There is an engine service
facility with roundhouse and a 131’ (40 m) turntable, there is also a large repair shop.

The city includes a passenger terminal with a short strech of streetcar track and some
industrial trackage for switching.

RAPID CITY
Large town containing a major rail terminal with a passenger station plus a local yard with
a small engine facility.

SPRINGFIELD
A smaller town with a local yard and a four track coal mine. From Springfield the single track
branch line takes off towards Adeline.

ANCHOR HEAD
A small community along the branch line with passing tracks, passenger station, grain
elevators and other local tracks.

ADELINE
A town at the end of the branch line, here we find two yards, a passenger station and engine
facility with a small turntable.

TECHNICAL DETAILS ETC.
We are running our trains in the old fashioned analog way. The layout is built into track
sections and a centrally located dispatcher will give out sections to each engineer after
the appropriate phone call and block request.

Signal indications and occupancy lights are triggered by Twin-T circuits so car axles should
be equipped with small resistors. The branch line is set up to allow testing locomotives with
digital operation.

Our controllers of pulse type are hand held and can be unplugged so each engineer will follow
his train around the layout. Sockets are located every 10’, (3 m). A couple of yards are set up
for switching with local, stationary, controllers. The track material used are of different brands
but the turnouts are all Shinohara. The track is code 100 with a newer industrial area built
using Roco track in code 83.

Most our lineside signal are from N J International. The locomotive and car couplers are from
Kadee.
